Kvarken Link and Rauma Marine Constructions for a new LNG fuelled Ferry

Finnish shipbuilding company Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) and Kvarken Link shipping company have announced a Letter of Intent concerning the construction of a new environmentally friendly Ro-Pax ferry.

The propulsion system will be hybrid system with a combination of a dual fuel (LNG/Biogas and diesel/SCR) and batteries, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) being the main source of fuel.

Equipped with a freight capacity of 1,500 lane metres for lorries and able to accommodate some 800 passengers, the car and passenger ferryboat will operate between the Finnish city of Vaasa and the Swedish city of Umeå. It will have an ice class of 1A Super, in order to guarantee navigation in the challenging ice conditions of the Kvarken region (the sea region corresponding to the narrowest part of the Gulf of Bothnia).

The vessel order, with a value of approximately EUR 120 million, will have an impact on employment totalling around 800 person-years, and the delivery will take place latest 30 April 2021.

Kvarken Link is owned by the city of Umeå and the city of Vaasa, both of whom provide as guarantors of the financing.
