First Russian LNG-powered river ship

On February 27th at the JSC Zelenodolsk river yard - located in the center of Russia on the Volga River and belonging to the Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation JSC - the "keel laying" ceremony of a river cruise ship was held, which will be the first of the of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation.

The river ship called Chaika, which was designed by Zelenodolsk PKB JSC, will have a capacity of 150-170 passengers and will be equipped with a single steel hull with aft engine room and a wheelhouse in the bow in the superstructure of the first level; it will satisfy the most recent transport safety requirements, with a high level of passenger comfort for tourist trips, accompanied by an Audio Guide system in five different languages.

The order for its construction at the JSC Zelenodolsk construction site was issued by the state transport leasing company PJSC following an open tender in the context of the implementation of a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of 25 December 2019, No. 1825 relating to the provision of subsidies between 2019 and 2021 to the federal budget of the aforementioned public company "State Transport Leasing Company". Evaluations are currently under consideration to build the infrastructure for the production of LNG and its refueling for road and inland waterway transport.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, who stressed the special importance of the event and in particular of liquefied natural gas, which has a great perspective in light of the country's gas reserves and of environmental aspects,  saying: "Today is a significant event not only for our Republic and our shipyard, but it is a significant event for all Russian shipbuilding as it is the first construction of a modern and ecological ship powered by liquefied natural gas"

The event was also attended by  the member of the management committee Gazprom Vyacheslav Mikhalenko, the Director of the state policy department in the maritime and river transport sector of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation Yuri Kostin, the Head of the executive committee of the Zelenodolsk Municipal District Mikhail Afanasyev, the Director General of the Russian River Register Federal Institute Vasily Ruzhev, the Director General of Ak Bars Holding Company JSC Ivan Egorov, the Director General of Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation JSC Renat Mistakhov, the Director General of the shipyard A. Zelenodolsky Plant JSC Gorky Alexander Karpov, the General Manager of JSC Zelenodolsk Design Bureau Evgeny Zhirkovi.
