The energy company Gasum, active in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Germany, leader in the liquid methane sector, last August won the competitive tender organized by the Finnish government purchasing center for the supply of LNG and bioGNL to the Transport Agency and the Coast Guard for 2021-2022.

Last August IES BIOGAS, a company of the Snam group specialized in the design, construction, management and assistance of biogas and biomethane plants, built in Veneto a plant for the production of biomethane from livestock manure for the production of bio-LNG up to a total capacity of about 13,000 tons / year. This is the fourth plant in Italy after the two in Lombardy and one in Piedmont.

Liquigas and Contarina, a public company for the management of waste in the 49 municipalities adhering to the Priula Basin Council, in the province of Treviso, have signed a project financing agreement aimed at the realization of a circular economy project, which involves the use of LNG and GNC, to feed Contarina’s urban waste collection fleet. In fact, the project envisages the use of biomethane produced by the treatment of the organic fraction at the Trevignano plant for the production of bioLNG.

At the end of February and beginning of April, the industrial gas companies SOL and Air Liquide, together with other partners, announced the start of work on their respective bioGNL production plants. Two plants are already in production in Italy: Cooperativa Speranza in Candiolo (TO) and Lucra 96 in Lodi, with a production capacity of just over 7000 cubic metres of bioGNL, using agricultural waste.

Last September, the Wärtsilä Group has been awarded a major contract to supply and construct a plant for production of CO2-neutral liquid transport fuels. The plant will liquefy gas from the natural gas grid to produce carbon-neutral LNG. It will have a capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per year and located in Cologne, Germany.

In addition to the many innovations in the development of direct uses of LNG in Italy, there are two other milestones: the first production of bioLNG and the first refuelling of a truck. The first truck refuelling operation took place on Thursday 5 November at the Vulcangas service station in Rimini thanks to the start of industrial production of bio LNG at the Lucra96 biogas liquefaction plant in Lodi, Lombardy.
