Sweden: LNG coastal storage facility in the port of Oxelösund ready to go

The Swedish company OxGas, controlled by the Port of Oxelösund on the Baltic Sea south of Stockholm, has commissioned MAN Energy Solution for the development and construction of a multifunctional coastal LNG depot in the port area, the design of which was entrusted to the Danish company COWI .

The idea launched at the end of 2017 by the Port to supply natural gas through the pipeline to the Oxelösund and Borlänge plants of the steel company SSAB for the replacement of petroleum fuels, and to offer all the other services: supplying LNG to the tankers, takes shape to trucks and ships, with bunkering carried out directly from the terminal or truck to ship.

The original project envisages a first 500 m3 tank dedicated to SSAB and a 30,000 m3 tank for all other uses. The goal is to move from the initial stage of 9100 tons of LNG to 500,000 tons per year by 2023. The terminal will also be able to use bioGNL both for the steel mill and to redistribute it by train and tank trucks in other parts of Sweden.

It is important for us to work with a company that understands our vision and demands for what will be the single largest investment ever made in the port,” said Douglas Heilborn, CEO of OxGas and Port of Oxelösund. “We have chosen to work with MAN Energy Solutions for their experience, competence and proactivity in offering cryogenic and complex multifunctional energy solutions. After its construction in two years, the terminal will be a key element in the development of the port, the city of Oxelösund and the accessibility of liquefied methane in Sweden in the coming decades.

We are proud to have been selected to support OxGas in the development of a new terminal,” said Louise Andersson, manager of MAN Cryo, based in Gothenburg, which is the MAN Energy Solutions competence center for cryogenic solutions. “We have been closely involved in the development of previous LNG terminal projects in Sweden and look forward to supporting OxGas and the port of Oxelösund in developing their new businesses.

We strongly believe in liquefied natural gas and other sustainable synthetic fuels as an important strategic pillar for the decarbonisation of the energy, transport and industrial sectors,” added Carsten Dommermuth, Senior Manager International Business Development at MAN Energy Solutions.
