European statistics (EU + EFTA countries) relating to liquefied natural gas (LNG) recently published by the Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association (NGVA Europe), highlighted a strong momentum in 2019 for the sales of LNG-powered heavy transport vehicles.
LNG heavy trucks, in fact, recorded a strong increase of registrations, with 4,510 new units sold, tripling compared to 2018 and far exceeding the new registrations of trucks and buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), equal respectively to 2,120 and 1,980 units.
Over 2,500 LNG trucks circulate in Italy, of which around 500 registered abroad, which can be refueled at 70 service stations (65 public and 5 corporate at transport company depots) as reported by Ref-e at 31 December last. The inaugurations of LNG service stations for trucks (another 10 serve only cars) continue also in 2020, at the rate of one a week.
More generally, illustrating the data including also compressed natural gas (CNG), the Secretary General of NGVA Europe, Andrea Gerini, commented: “The data confirm the growing attraction of the mobility of natural gas for European consumers. This is the result of advanced technology for gas vehicles with high engine efficiency and performance, widespread infrastructure and a low total cost of ownership (TCO), but also great environmental benefits of gas in transportation. “
